Understanding Islam

This book gives a thorough introduction to Islam for the reader coming from either a Jewish or Christian affiliation.  In the initial chapter, the author introduces the concepts of the Qur'an and Sunnah and clarifies terms that are used with different meanings across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  The second chapter, entitled "Islam Pre-Muhammad", presents the Islamic view of creation and explores prophetic history, with special emphasis on the Pre-Isrealite Prophets, the non-Isrealite Prophets, Isrealite Prophets, Zachariah and John the Baptist and Jesus Christ ( peace be upon them).  The third chapter, consisting of over 100 pages, presents a concise biography of the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).  Chapter 4, building upon the brief introduction given in the first chapter, presents a detailed look at the Qur'an and Sunnah.  Chapter five presents and explores the Islamic articles of faith, while chapter six gives a detailed accounting of the Islamic pillars of religious practice.  Chapters seven throug nine cover the Islamic concept of Jihad and terrorism, and fully explore the Islamic limits that are placed on any form of warfare.  The final chapter, chapter ten, offers a few suggestions of readers who are interested in continuing to learn more about Islam.  Given the books scope and detail, it serves as the single best initial book to give for Da'wah purposes, a wonderful guide for those just wanting an understanding of Islam, and a must read for the convert to Islam who has come from a Jewish or Christian background.  Additionally, it is the perfect book for converts to Islam to give to their family members or friends who are having trouble understanding the convert's acceptance of Islam.
